“Spend a day with a guide, you call the shots”
If you have little or no mountaineering experience, or haven’t worked with ropes for a while, this course will help you to get your feet on the ground by concreting in some basics - in a practical and hands-on way.
What you will learn during this course could be utilised by you in future mountaineering adventures or sub-alpine activities.
Course Content
By participating in the Sharpen Up Program your guide can introduce you to the following skills:
- Tie into your harness & cover basic knots
- Belaying and rope skills
- Rock climbing
- Abseiling
- Walking on uneven ground
- Cramponing (if conditions dictate)
This course is most suited to those who want to:
- climb Mt Aspiring
- prepare themselves for an ascent program
- get a taste of adventure
- refresh your climbing skills
- get over your fear of heights
- learn better footwork on uneven ground
Sample day outing
We meet at the Aspiring Guides office in Wanaka early morning. Equipment is reviewed and allocated by your guide. We drive to the appropriate area most suited to the skills required. This largely depends on whether you are continuing on an expedition or ascent afterwards. Locations can be at the Remarkables ski area, Treble Cone ski area, local Wanaka rock crags, Base Camp Wanaka. Lunch is provided.
