This is a challenging trek involving climbing Sisyphus Peak (1859m) requiring a good standard of fitness.
We drive up the magnificent Matukituki valley to Cameron flat. We cross the crag creek bridge over the Matukituki river and wander up the East Matukituki Valley, underneath the impressive cliffs of Hells Gate, up grassy river flats passed the historic Mount Aspiring Station homestead (into a valley of unspoiled natural beauty with no huts).
We camp at the Rock of Ages bivvy - a huge rock bivvy with magnificent views of waterfalls and the Kitchener cirque. approx 5 hours walking.
We head up the Rainbow valley to the top of Sisyphus Peak (1859m) which yields some of the best views in the Park of Mount Aspiring and East Matukituki valley. approx 9 hours return.
We return to Rock of Ages Bivvy for a good night's sleep. We exit via the Matukituki Valley savouring the views, returning to Wanaka late afternoon.

Day 1. We meet at the ASPIRING GUIDES office in Wanaka (level 1, 99 Ardmore St) at 8.30 am where you are welcomed by your Guide. Equipment is reviewed and final preparations are made. We depart Wanaka and drive up to Cameron Flat, and walk into Rock of Ages Bivvy. Hut. Approx - 5 hours
Day 2. Next morning we head up the Rainbow valley to the top of Sisyphus Peak. We leave the saddle and drop back down to Rock of Ages Bivvy for the night (9 hours).
Day 3. Walk out from Rock of Ages Bivvy to the carpark, savouring the last of breathtaking views. Return to Wanaka. |
