Cascade Saddle - 3 or 5 days The Cascade Saddle links the majestic West Matukituki and Dart Valleys that lie in the Mount Aspiring National Park.
Cascade Saddle is a challenging trek; the journey starts in the Matukituki valley - a river valley bordered by native beech forest - then ascends steeply through beech forest and onto tussock slopes that lead up to the Saddle. It is an alpine type pass crossing at an elevation of 1524 metres.
The views from Cascade Saddle into the glaciers and surrounding peaks of the Mount Aspiring massif are spectacular, a nearby outlook known as 'Heads Leap' gives reason to the name given by the early pioneers. This is a truly majestic region of the Mount Aspiring National Park offering a unique mix of geography and a true appreciation of the remnants of the ice age.
The 3 day route finishes down West Matukituki River Valley, while the 5 day route descends alongside the impressive Dart Glacier, and finishes with a thrill seeking & exhilarating jetboat ride to Paradise Valley, Glenorchy. This is an ideal way to complete a great journey!
