Black Peak Alpine Trek 1-3 days

Often mistaken for Mount Aspiring, Black Peak (2283m) is Wanaka's most dominant mountain peak. The views from the top are spectacular. The sub-alpine gardens diverse, Rock Wren and Kea (alpine parrot) plentiful. Join us as we fly, then climb to the summit of this truly memorable peak.

Where is Black Peak ?
Bordering the Mt Aspiring National Park, Black Peak is located in the heart of the Harris Mountains. Part of New Zealand's largest mountain chain, the Southern Alps, that extends 700 km down the entire length of the South Island. It can be raining elsewhere and still be fine in Wanaka. Wanaka has the unique advantage of being based in a rain shadow area.

Logistics for day trek - fly in and walk out ($250 per person)
After a helicopter safety briefing, fly to the summit of Black Peak. From here we can see Mount Aspiring, Mount Aoraki (Cook), Mount Earnslaw, and a vista of the mighty southern alps. After this exhilirating experience, we walk down to our hut to have morning tea. After applying more sun block, we head out to the ridge and follow the traverse to the summit of Treble Cone. We encounter scree slopes, tussock, Mt Cook lily, Kea (alpine parrots). We then make our way down the "cat" tracks of TC, to a vehicle which takes us back to Wanaka.
