Robrosa Backcountry Ski Tour July 2016

Will Middleton

Both Morgan and Andrea did an outstanding job conducting the trip in a way which challenged the advanced skiers in our group whilst also providing a safe and enjoyable experience for the less advanced skiers in the group.  Good introductory terrain for a big group, great scenery, good way to learn the basics of ski touring, great guides. It was an outstanding experience.
Looking forward to another trip with Aspiring Guides in the future.

More Information

Advanced skiers will find steep chutes right out the door, with a fast turn around time you can ski rock walled couloirs or huck bluffs until the penguins come home.  No need to carry anything more than a shovel, transceiver and smile. Further afield are the Lowburn Faces where you can tour a different backcountry bowl with every run.

Intermediate skiers will appreciate the labyrinth of easy angles slopes and valleys that can be followed.  For people new to touring this is a great place to learn the ins and outs of how to use touring skis. There are inspiring views of Mt Cook, Mt Aspiring and the chain of the Southern Alps.

With helicopter access right from Wanaka Airport you get the most skiing possible packed into your ski touring holiday.  From our office in Wanaka you are at the top of your first run within the hour and there is no need to carry a heavy pack or eat dehydrated food, you can bring all the goodies!

Itinerary / Trip Options (multi)

Day One

We usually meet at our office in Wanaka at 8:30 in the morning.  With a 10 minute drive to meet our helicopter at Wanaka Airport this has to be the fastest “town to tour” in the country.  Aspiring Guides pioneered ski touring in the area and we placed Robrosa Hut to take advantage of the high southern exposures of the Cliffburn Valley. Our backpacks are light because sleeping bags, cooking gear and other necessities will already be in the hut.  After dropping our gear we get straight into the local runs.  Some people are more comfortable with the long easy ridges while others prefer the steep chutes that blanket the area.

New Zealand Snowshoe Hiking

Days Two - Three

In our experience people want one thing, powder snow.   Whether we stay local or explore the numerous bowls on the Lowburn Face just depends on how hard you want to hit it.  You will be blown away at the wide variety of ski runs available.

Day Four

The ski tour out from Robrosa Hut  to the Snow Farm Nordic Area is about 12km with 500m gain and 750m descent.  Skiing out via the Princeburn Valley offers over 6km continuous downhill and with only a light pack to carry it is a ski tour to savor.  There is ample opportunity to stop and enjoy some of the steeper cliff runs along the way.  We usually arrive back at the vehicle at 4pm followed by a 5pm thirst quenching debrief at Aspiring Guides Wanaka office.

NB : Please note that this itinerary is a sample only and the actual itinerary may vary at the discretion of your guide. Weather, conditions and personal ability and needs may make changes necessary or advantageous to the participants.
