Norway Ski Touring - Oksfjord, Loppa

Loppa is located on the far north coast of Norway high above the arctic circle.

Norway Skiing

"Exquisite snow that goes all the way to the beach! A thoroughly unique and memorable backcountry skiing experience! There are not many places left where outstanding wilderness back country skiing, combined with excellent logistics and accommodation can be had without paying a small fortune.  Somehow Whitney managed to pull it off."

More Information

We have a series of houses rented and will move to three different locations.  Using ferries and boats we can explore deep into the fjords and ski untracked snow until the reindeer come home.  We do our own cooking, each house is equipped with a modern, well appointed kitchen and all food preferences can be easily accommodated.  All accommodation places have Wi-Fi and cell phone reception.

Available Dates

April 22 - 2 May 2018
Nine days skiing

Physical Difficulty

Ski touring days are not long, usually 5-6 hours, but there are steep long hills and skiers should have good endurance and the ability to walk for long periods of time at a slow but steady pace. You will only need to carry a light day pack. If you are used to long distance running, biking or hiking in mountainous terrain you should be fine. We are happy to provide a complete training programme for people who want some guidance.

Technical Difficulty

The skills required for skiing uphill are much less demanding technically than downhill skills.  Participants should have some previous experience ski touring and intermediate to strong downhill skiing experience. You don't need to be an expert skier but you should be experienced with dealing with poor snow conditions such as breakable crust or deep soft snow.  We bring along ice axe and crampons on some tours but this is just insurance, it is not a technical mountaineering trip.

Itinerary / Trip Options (multi)

April 22 : We meet in Alta.  Alta is easily accessable from Oslo.  The team will meet for dinner and go over the plans for the trip.  There will be time to make last minute purchases or to rent equipment.

April 23 - 26 : We relocate from Alta to Jokelfjord (1hr).  Jokelfjord is a tiny fishing village famous for its view of the only glacier in Europe that calves directly into the ocean.  There is skiing directly from the accommodation, or if we choose, we can catch a boat shuttle across the fjord.   Easy terrain and sparse forest make this the ideal place to get used to skiing in the Arctic Circle. Our accommodation for the next three nights is at the foot of the run so you will be lounging in front of the fire minutes after you finish skiing.

April 27- 30 :  Driving to Oksfjord (1 hr.) we catch the evening ferry across the fjord and relocate to the isolated village of Nuvsvag.  Here there is a lifetime of skiing directly out the door of our comfortable and modern house.   From huge glacier runs to easy tree skiing there is skiing for every ability.

May 1 : Leaving Nuvsvag we catch the ferry to Oksfjord and a day skiing in the mountains above the village.  That night we stay in Alta and have a final dinner celebration.

May 2 : Fly out from Alta with memories of a lifetime.
